Darcy ShanklandCharleston Magazine

Charleston Magazine / Editor in Chief

A native of California, Darcy Shankland worked for Santa Barbara magazine for eight years before moving to the South Carolina Lowcountry in August 2000 to take the helm of Charleston, a bimonthly publication published by Gulfstream Communications (GC). Since then, the city’s premier lifestyle publication has grown in page count, number of subscribers, and frequency (it has been a monthly publication since 2007) and has won multiple industry awards, including several FOLIO magazine Eddies for Best Regional Consumer Magazine (2007), Best Series of Articles (2015), Best Single Article in a Regional Consumer Magazine (2016), and Best Full Issue (2018).

In revamping the content of Charleston, Darcy placed a focus on covering local philanthropy and nonprofit organizations and developed the annual Giving Back Awards. Under her guidance as editor in chief, Charleston spun off two new titles, Charleston Home and Charleston Weddings. Additionally, she was instrumental in creating the GC sister publication, WNC—mountain living in Western North Carolina.

Darcy is a past board member for the Center for Women, Coastal Community Foundation, Halsey Institute for Contemporary Art, and Lowcountry AIDS Services. When not out and about learning all things Charleston and preparing for the magazine’s 50th anniversary in 2025, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Wally Seinsheimer, and their crazy Lab, Lola.
