Liz RennieThe Charleston Mattress

    The Charleston Mattress / Co-Owner

Born and raised in Moncks Corner, SC, Liz has called the Lowcountry home for most of her life.  She graduated from Wofford College with degrees in English and philosophy.  Her MFA in creative writing is from Queens University.
Professionally, Liz began her career in the Peace Corps, stationed in Cape Verde.  While in West Africa, she partnered with other NGOs on sustainability projects, training programs, health initiatives and adult education.  But she learned much more than she taught. Upon completion of her assignment, she returned to the States and worked for six years in the Media Relations Department at what is now called Explore Charleston. Her focus was editorial coverage, copy writing, and she thoroughly enjoyed her interactions with writers and reporters from around the globe, some with whom she still enjoys corresponding. One of her favorite duties was shepherding the Be A Tourist in Your Own Town program that reminded locals what a special place we call home.
Liz wrote copy for MD Design for several years. While still writing pre-AI business copy and ghost-writing obituaries, she and her husband opened The Charleston Mattress – showcasing locally built sleep products that had been featured in hotels and commercial properties for decades but had fallen off the radar for local residents. Response was positive, and the shop grew to include an in-house delivery team and the spin-off company, BedShred.com that now keeps sleep products out of landfills and recycles them into carpet padding and other materials. The Charleston Mattress shop on East Montague was one of the original retail storefronts in the latest revitalization of Park Circle, where Liz and her family enjoy living, working and playing.
These days, Liz enjoys creek fishing in her 40-year-old kayak, road trips, frequenting local restaurants, hiking, traveling and hanging with her family, and occasionally, a competitive game of basketball or pickleball.
